We understand that you may have many questions concerning our activities, and are available via e-mail or phone to answer them. Please contact Scott Epstein, Staff Administrator, at swe@datatel.com.
Frequently Ask Questions About CQIN
Is membership in CQIN limited to two-year colleges?
No. CQIN membership extends to all 2 and 4 year colleges and universities. Moreover, non-profit organizations allied with higher education are encouraged to join (e.g. accrediting commissions, national higher education associations), as are corporations who partner with higher education institutions.
Is membership limited to U.S. Institutions?
No. Membership is open to all higher education institutions and their affiliates globally. Currently we have a member college in South Korea.
Can K-12 Institutions join CQIN?
At this time CQIN membership is limited to institutions of higher education. However, K-12 institutions that wish to affiliate can do so through the higher education partner institutions in their region. K-12 participants are always welcome at our events as guest affiliates of our member organizations. Please check our directory to identify CQIN members in your region.
How and When Are Annual Dues Collected?
CQIN operates on the academic calendar model. CQIN’s Treasurer invoices each member on July 1st. of each year. Dues are payable within 30 days. By paying dues, the member institution re-affirms their membership in CQIN. If institutions fail to pay their dues within 90 days of the invoice, it will be assumed that the institution no longer is a member of CQIN.
Is it true that CQIN is primarily a network for CEOs?
Yes this is true. However, CQIN encourages CEO’s to designate an institution representative to assist her/him with both the communication and organization of all of their organizations activities before and after CQIN events. In addition, CEO’s who volunteer to be part of CQIN’s Dashboard Project must assign an Institutional Effectiveness Representative from this college, usually someone in research, to interface with their counterparts across the CQIN network.
What happens with a CQIN CEO leaves and moves to another institution?
The membership travels with the CEO to their new institution. That is, the new institution becomes a member of CQIN automatically upon transmittal of a request from the CEO via email. In addition, our Executive Team contacts the institution where the CEO left and requests the incoming CEO to re-affirm their membership to CQIN via email and the payment of dues.
What happens when a CQIN CEO Retires?
The institution remains a member of CQIN during the period of recruitment of a new CEO. The CQIN Representative keeps the CQIN Executive Team aware of the recruitment process and communicates to the Executive Team the name and contact information on the new CEO when the process is satisfactorily completed. Interim CEO replacements are encouraged to attend CQIN events.
Some CEOs may not be able to regularly attend meetings.
Do you have any policies about CEO alternates?
Yes. Please review the Policies Regarding Substitutes Below.
Who can attend CQIN’s Summer Institutes?
Any employee or designated guest of a member institution may attend a summer institute. In addition, any prospective member (college, non-profit, or corporate) may request attendance at the summer institute through CQIN’s meeting manager. As space is available, those requests will be honored on a first-come-first-served basis. All guests will be subject to the fees and restrictions afforded regular CQIN participants.
Who should attend CQIN’s Summer Institutes?
Summer institutes are traditionally based on team participation. Each organization is encouraged to bring a team of at least 5 participants. The make up of the team is at the discretion of the CEO and the organization and varies each year depending on the theme for a specific institute (e.g. the Disney Institute in 2000 focused on human resource management; most teams had a strong HR focus among the participants).
Can an institution have more than one designated CQIN Representative?
Yes. The CEO of a member institution can designate more than one CQIN Representative.
Policy Statement on CEO Attendance at CQIN Events
Adopted by the Executive Team February 23, 2005
Background
CQIN is an organization that was chartered by and for CEO’s in higher education who wished to network with other CEOs committed to the principles and practices of continuous quality improvement.
When CQIN CEOs do not attend either CEO meetings and/or summer institutes, it detracts from the success of the organization because it limits the sharing of knowledge, organizational planning and future CQIN activities.
CEO attendance at both CQIN CEO meetings and at summer institutes has varied over the years. While a large number of CEOs regularly attend both meetings, several have chosen either not to attend or to send a designee. While this poses only minor logistical and planning problems with summer institutes, it has been a source of concern to many CQIN CEOs regarding the CEO-specific meetings.
The Executive Team has considered many options and has debated the pros and cons of each over the years and has set forth some policies that have not always met with support and/or were enforceable.
Therefore, the following policy has been adopted to support institutional preference in this matter as well as to provide a constant flow of communication among members of CQIN.
Policy
- If a CEO is unable to attend a specific CQIN CEO meeting, he/she may designate to the CQIN President in writing (letter or email) a substitute to represent their institution at that meeting. However, if there is a private CQIN CEO sharing session, the substitute understands that it will be for CQIN CEOs exclusively.
- If a CEO is unable to attend any CQIN meetings but is committed to the CQIN organization, he/she may appoint a senior executive within their institution to be the ongoing, regular participant at all CQIN and CEO events. The CEO must communicate this decision to the CQIN President in writing (letter or email).
